It's been a slow week for my principle project, Phitext. Mainly, due to various distractions occurring in the business and in the industry at large.
Firstly, I feel the end of financial year fast approaching (June 30, Australia). This being the first year of Phiware I want to catch any gotcha's early. Lack of a (trusted) accountant does make things easier and I'm still getting used to the world of bookkeeping. I have very few physical receipts and invoices, having the majority of my business in cyberspace and all my operations online. So I want a shrink-wrapped solution to my bookkeeping needs and to help me fulfill my tax obligations. I've decided to sign up (free until August) at xero.com. Xero is a bookkeeping SaaS company from New Zealand, which is tailored to Aus and (obviously) NZ. My favourite feature is the fast bank reconciliation that automatically pulls transaction from PayPal and banks that have direct feeds. My financial institution doesn't have a direct feed but the import function is pretty spiffy too. My only gripe is that I have to pay a lot more just to get multiple currency support.
Second, I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of my iPad, which finally arrived yesterday. I'm pleased to say Phitext works as expected, after a few bug fixes I might just be happy with v1.1. (Although I find it hard to meet my own high standards; the good enough solution for Phitext has been a hard one.)
Finally, there has been WWDC and I note that the session videos are now available to the rest of us iPhone devs not at the conference. Having just watched session 110, I believe I've made a design error and now I'm considering a small rewrite of PhiTextStorage and PhiTextFrame. So now I just need to muster up the courage to risk introducing a whole slew of bugs for some future proofing and a little efficiency gain. Of course, better design would possibly fix some bugs.

I've just heard that Apple have announced that the iPad will reach my shores (Australia) on May 28. After what seems like a long delay, I'm happy to say that Apple have kept their prices down.
I had expected that the top end (64GB+3G) model would be priced at AU$1100 while I had seen others estimates much higher. But starting from at $629 and ranging to $1049 it's only 15% the current exchange rate. (This is more impressive if you consider that the pricing may have been set before the Aussie dollar dropped after a government announcement last Monday.) There was some cynicism given the Australian pricing of the iPhone (many phone carriers offered the phone unattached to a contract for well over $1000), but I attribute that to the deals made with the phone carriers. In my view, Apple are much more price sensitive when it comes to the iPhone and iPad than they have been in the past with the desktop and laptop products. |

My web host provider has been experiencing difficulties for the past 12 hours, meanwhile I've been itching to announce Phitext... but we're back and I'm pleased to finally release a beta to developers who contact me. |

I've received reports that people have contacted me but I've not received any mail. I tend to respond quickly (barring time differences) you should expect a response within an hour or two. If you have used the contact form but haven't heard back from me within a day, please try again. I may have a flood of interest and not know it :)
Speaking of floods, recent rain in Victoria (try "Melbourne Flood" at YouTube) has interrupted my ISP, I'm currently operating over the 3G network. This means I can't get my hands on the 3.2 beta 4, but I am still able to distribute copies of Phitext beta 1.1. Very frustrating; I think I'll spend that little bit extra and get a 3G enabled iPad. |

I had some positive feedback on my previous post. I thought I might give you another little teaser:

This one clearly shows the text selection handles (aka grabbers). Of course, I cropped the image in my favorite image editing software, but this is an accurate representation of the user interface. The handles snap to word ending when modifying the text selection and cut, copy and paste are fully functional.
CoreText is used to draw and NSAttributedString is used to store the rich text format. With these two technologies the Phiware rich text editor has a wealth of features to format paragraphs and play with fonts and colors. But now I have to stop before I start talking about things Apple doesn't want me to talk about just yet. |
